Yerba Mate is often used to relieve mental and physical fatigue. Orally, it is often used as a diuretic, as a mild analgesic for headaches, for treating and managing mood or affective disorders, and to help treat joint pains. In large amounts, Yerba Mate can even be used as a laxative. The list goes on, as Yerba mate is used to treat depression, diabetes, prediabetes, weight loss, hyperlipidemia, urinary tract infections, osteoporosis, chronic fatigue syndrome, nervous heart complaints, hypotensions, cardiac insufficiency, arrhythmias, kidney and bladder stones. As a detox, it is used to promote cleansing and excretion of waste.
Diabetes: Preliminary clinical evidence has shown that drinking Yerba mate tea three times daily can decrease fasting blood glucose by up to 17% and glycated hemoglobin by 0.85% in patients with type 2 diabetes.
Obesity and Weight Loss:
Clinical research has shown that 1 g of yerba mate, three times daily, will decrease body fat mass and percent body fat. Yerba Mate oral capsules have also been shown in studies to cause weight loss after 10 days.
Another 12-week study on overweight people showed that those given 3 grams of Yerba mate powder per day lost on average, 1.5 lbs and reduced their waist to hip ratio by 2%. This result shows belly fat loss.
Other participants given a placebo gained an average of 6.2 lbs and increased their waist to hip ratio by 1% over the same 12-week period.
